The Making of "The Ring"

My first post, my first topic... :) Well... I know most might wonder how i made a ring out of coins when i told them that the ring i wear was actually made out of coins... well first of all these no heat applied to d coin at all... i only use hammer to make the Ring shape out of d coin and there's a few other tools to complete the whole process... I got the idea of how to make a ring out of coin from my friend long time ago... i think it was 6 years ago... when i was in form 2... :)... he didn't actually show me how he did it but he only explain... so, when i get d idea of how to make it, i straight away try it out... i manage to make a ring out of a coin... but then its not as perfect at the first attempt... few attempts after that i eventually manage to make it as perfect as i could possibly do... the ring looks as real as d ones u might find in jewelry shop... once i tried making a ring out of RM1 coin.. which is very hard to get rite now... it actually looks like gold... but the bad thing is that it is actually copper... and it tends to loose its shine after a while... i need to polish it often to keep it shiny all the time... :)

oraitz.. that's the basic stuff and so called history of how i get to know how to make the rings... :)
now comes the process of making the ring part...

the tools required to make the ring... hammer, drill bits, vice grip pliers, files, and impact drill....

This file bit is optional... it costs RM46.. but it helps reduce the time to complete d ring... :)

any metal base as an anvil... where i'm going to hammer the sides of the coin...

first step : hold the coin as in the picture... then hit the sides of the coin with a hammer until the thickness of the side of the ring expands... do this until the coin changes shape like the one in the picture bellow... :)

the coin that have been hammered and the original

closer look...

the thickness difference of the coin... notice the side of the coin is kinda flat... you can actually leave it that way or you can have more curve on it... i prefer to have more curve at the sides... it looks nicer...

the way to make the side curve more is to hammer the sides of the coin when it is tilted in an angle... and make sure you hold on to the coin with a vice grip pliers... because the coin tend to slip since you're hitting it in an angle and you might hit your own finger instead of the coin... it happens to me a lot!! :P

this is curved shape you should get after the previous procedure... :P

almost done... the shape of the ring is there but there's no hole in it... next step is to make a hole in the coin... :)

first u need to do is to clamp the coin onto a vice... or u can use a vice grip pliers as well... but i prefer using a vice... then drill a hole using a smaller drill bit at first... then continue using thicker bits...

the hole drilled on the coin...

once you got the coin drilled with the thickest drill bit u have, time to file the hole using a round file... ok, this take a lot of time... there's another way of doing so... which u need the file bit...

attach the file bit on the impact drill or a dremel(if u have one)... and start to file...

this what u get after filing with a file bit... and it almost done!!!! :P
what to do next is to refine the "ring"... using normal files...

start filing the outer part of the ring to smoothen the surface using a flat file... and the inside as well but using a round file... :)

do it until u get it to look like the picture above and as fine as u could possibly make... :)

next is to sand the ring until it is super smooth!! starting with a rough sand paper, 240 grade or somewhere around that grade... then goes to a smoother ones, 600 until 1000 grade...

cut or tear off a small piece of sand paper and start sanding the ring inside and out until it is supper smooth!!!!!!... :P

and its already smooth!!! but cant really see in the picture... the final step is to polish it!!! :)

this is what you need to polish the ring... facial cottons(cloth will do too) and metal polish... :)

apply the metal polish onto the ring... and start polishing the ring using the facial cotton or cloth... :)

and its 100% done!!!! woohhoOO!!!!!!!!! a ring made out of coins... :) u can try it out yourself since all the procedures have been explained... have fun!!!

this is a ring made out of 50cents coin... is kinda deformed unintentionally when i made it last time... maybe because i hit too hard or something... but kinda like d way it turned out.. :P

and this one is made out of RM1 coin... which is difficult to get nowadays since its not been used anymore... it looks like gold!!! but then it tends to loose its shine and look like cooper again after a while... need to polish often to keep it shiny... :P

rings made out of three different coins.... :)

have fun trying y'all!!!! :)
